Arlette it seems pretty clear to you that the priest has some sort of ulterior motive related to the church, possibly his position within the church.

Arlette looks the priest up and down before turning her gaze to her companions, attempting to convey to them a look of "this mans story simply doesn't add up". She hopes that after travelling together for so long at least one of her companions understands her, at least Fera might she thinks, turning to him last.

The priest leads you all down the center of the great chamber. To either side you see small huddled groups of peasants or beggars, each small circle with one or more members of the cloth. The people greedily eat from wooden bowls while eagerly nodding at what the priests are saying. The priests are gesturing as they talk, with more than one pointing fingers at the group, fingers that are met with hung heads and sheepish looks.

Eventually you are led to a hallway at the end of the chamber and down it's well lit length. To either side, open doorways reveal what you assume to be the children of the peasants and beggars outside. They have been separated into age groups, one age-group in each room. Within you see several members of the church appear to be educating the children, walking amongst them, a gentle hand on a shoulder here and there as they gesture at a scroll or paper that the child is writing on. Some of the classes with the younger children seem more relaxed, with some singing.

At the end of the hall is a room full of baths and soap.

"Please, cleanse yourselves," he says while gesturing into the room. "Then you may take up our alms that we freely gift to those in need."

This last part he says with a sad look, slowly shaking his head.

DM is this the normal sort of church activities that Hilda would be used to?

Hilda, no. This is all very unusual in your experience as a cleric (Hragg as well). Alms are usually freely given, with no requirements to bathe. The education that you see occurring is also a little unusual, generally speaking peasants wouldn't need much education and the childrens time would be better spent on the farm; same with the parents. But from what you've seen, this appears to be more of a scipture-based education (based on the scrolls and snippets you've heard walking by); with which you couldn't know if this is normal or not as you're not a member of this church.

"Something isn't right here" Arlette looks to the others, "to be safe, don't eat their food, try not to listen to their chants. Plus we're here for a reason, Hilda, you or Hragg should talk to the priest or whoever you think would know where to find Father Klavin. The rest of you, stay alert, who knows what is going on here."

Brown Dog nestles up to Arlette's legs, her fur standing up, ears pricked, "Clever dog" Arlette reaches down to pat her.

Hilda will go with Hragg to speak to the priest as he walks away and ask him about Father Klavin. We'll be careful not to reveal too much information though (so we won't mention Hextor, cults, dead bodies or why we're asking about him).

Hilda and Hragg when you ask the priest about Father Klavin the priest seems to change his demeanor. He seems a little less like "the humble servant of god" and a little more like "the righteous servant of god".

"Klavin?! Hmpth. I thought your group looked a little too well worn to be peasants. Father Klavin isn't here, he's in the rectory most likely." the priest points a finger back to the main chamber that you entered through. "At the back there's a hallway that'll take you there."

I'll assume that the group will proceed directly to the rectory to find Father Klavin

You make your way back down the hall and across the great cathedral chamber, past the small groups of huddled peasants being taught scripture by stern-looking priests. You find the hallway to the rectory easily enough. There's no one down at this end of the cathedral, and no one in the hall, though it is as well lit as all the other rooms you've seen so far.

Making your way down the hall you pass a few open doorways; one of these small rooms looks to Hilda and Hragg to be a sacristy, another a store-room, another seems to be some kind of small shrine with a reflecting pool. At the end of the hall is a closed wooden door made of strong oak, iron bands run it's length.

The door is locked.
