Arlette, a few coins and a few hours later and you think you've got a pretty good idea of what was happening around the gate. It started with the locals, hearing rumours from the travelling merchants of recent trouble on the trails. After a while, this concern and worry bubbled over into the city officials and the aristocracy. So in response, the local lord, Lord Peror Glavi, has decreed that the town gates will be closed between nightfall and sunrise, and has increased the usual guard. Even farmers from the local area and coming into the town at nightfall.

You haven't managed to find a single person in town who has heard anything other than rumour though. There are some merchants in the Inn who have been attacked on the road, and only due to their guards were they able to safely make it through the trails. There is a lot of quiet cursing of the King, the trails are supposed to be patrolled by his troops. Some of the locals have been making impromptu patrols of their own around the town, but Lord Glavi put a stop to that quickly.

The gnome merchant isn't around, and no one seems to know who you're talking about.

There's lots of people you could try and pick-pocket from here. Pick-pocket rules work like this:
  1. You roll a Sleight of Hand check
  2. If the result is 20 or higher then you succeed and you got yourself a bit of coin
  3. If the result is less than 20 then you failed
  4. In either case, whether you succeed or not, the person you're robbing gets a Spot check.
  5. If their spot result is greater than your sleight of hand, they notice you doing it. This applies even if you failed to rob them
After studying the surroundings you sort of hone in on a couple of people who look like good candidates:
  1. There's two well-dressed men surrounded by four lackeys. They are all well-dressed, though the two men in particular are boasting to each other while the surrounding men pay attention and laugh at their jokes. They all seem a cut-above the other people in the Inn (from a social-strata perspective).
  2. There's a woman dressed in the tell-tale robes of a mage. Could be that she has something interesting in her purse.
  3. Another woman, who is tonight's entertainment, plays a lute vigorously and sings in the corner. Quite a few coins have gone her way which you notice she adeptly pockets.
  4. Finally, there's what looks like another adventurer nearby as well. Quietly talking to some others, laughing occasionally. His coin purse looks heavy

Where did that gnome merchant go? Did she not make it to town?

Arlette scans the room and is caught by the rich men with their lackeys, surely those of the Inn wouldn't be upset with a few coin coming out of the pockets of the clearly elite that would go to the hands of the lower-class; she likes to make friends in low places, they are often the ones who help out in an hour of need.

Arlette, you walk by, dagger at your side, you try to cut the string as you pass, hoping for it to drop into your hand. Your blade tugs at the cord but failed to slice. The man feels a tug at his waist and looks down.

The man dismisses it and continues boasting with his companions.

Dang it. Not wanting to stand out, Arlette targets the second wealthy gentleman as she passes by.

Once again, your dagger fails to cut the purse strings. Maybe you need to sharpen it? In any case, the pulling and tugging causes the man to look down.1d20

"Hey there! Thief!" he calls out, trying to grab at you. "I say! THIEF!"

The group of six wealth men move from their table and close in on you in the crowd. A few people nearby take notice and step back.

"Somebody call the town guard!" shouts the man you first attempted to rob. "Don't let them get away!"

Arlette you're in a bit of a situation now. Your friends are behind you, the doors out are on the far side of the wealthy men.

"Damn fool girl," Hilda mutters to herself. She will step forward and stand just behind Arlette, hand on her mace. "Now might be a good time to hide behind my skirt again, girl."

Arlette puts her hand up, motioning for Hilda to not be too concerned as she addresses the gentlemen.

"Sirs, please, it's a simple misunderstanding, I moved by you too closely and stumbled on the uneven Inn floor, I was not trying to take anything from you"

The man laughs at your attempt to convince him you slipped. "Do you think us daft girl?! You are a thief."

But then he pauses, placing his thumb upon his chin, stroking the tuft of hair he has there. "But then tell me, what arrangement did you have in mind?"
