Character Creation - Wikk Slyscale

Post by Wikk Slyscale » Mon Apr 13, 2020 8:31 am

Wikk Slyscale
Illusionist, Dragonseeker

[OOC]: Mechanically, my desired character will be a Dragonwrought Kobold Wizard (from the Races of the Dragon book p.37) whom specializes in the illusion school of magic. Unlike his tribesmen whom have keened their minds to channel the magical essence in their dragonblood, Wikk is of a different mindset entirely. Rather than rely solely upon the rites and traditions of his tribe, his ravenous curiosity will send him to the ends of the realm in search of greater magical power and the link between his ground-locked claws and his draconic ascension. Personally, he is unexpectedly brave; though he reserves that fire within his scaly breast for only the most dire of encounters. Kobolds are known to be weak, filthy and simple-minded cowards; it is with these stereotypes that Wikk earned the title of Slyscale.

4d6-L Wisdom 10

4d6-L Intelligence 17

4d6-L Charisma 10

4d6-L Constitution (-2 Racial) = 12

4d6-L Strength (-4 Racial) = 4

4d6\u002dL Dexterity (+2 Racial) 18

I'm a bit confused here as I've only added six rolls and seven come up. - the one below this line I don't recall rolling, so I'm going to ignore it and assign the above six.

I love this idea.

You seem to know what you're doing? Get your character sheet setup for a level 2, Kobold Wizard; don't forget that Dragonwrought is your 1st-level feat. You also need to let me know what kind of dragon heritage you have so that you can increase that skill-check accordingly.

We'll also need to think of a way to get you in game. The players are about to enter the swamp in search of the reason for a taint etc; so I think it would be good if you can come up with a reason as to why you're in the swamp (you'll cross each others paths). Take a look at the world map and let me know roughly where your tribe is located, they can be off the map as well if you like.

FYI, I should have mentioned this earlier, but no evil characters. You can be neutral by all means, and Wikk can always be looking out for himself etc, but nothing overtly evil.

As it happens I have very little idea what I'm actually doing lol. I am slowly figuring it out though by reading through other posts! I'm certainly not going to be going for an optimal or overly useful build so I'll likely be burning most of my feats for character development. I'm enamored of the idea that he is of a Pristmatic lineage. Sparkly boy. As for how he ends up in the swamp I imagine that he'll be looking for anything resembling a place of magical power. If there's anything like an arcane leyline there - or any reason for him to believe there is one somewhere in the swamp he'd be there.

So, for sheets is there a fillable document already in use for players or are we just keeping our own? I'm fine with either.
Having a little trouble finding the world map but I'm still looking. -

Found it!
His alignment is going to be L/N. I believe his tribe would be either in the Cravenloft Mountain or the Worldmouth. He could've floated down either river to the Murkwater, assuming that's the swamp in play.

The party is in Southport, in the Furgalan Swamp, in the south-east. Worldmouth is technically an entrance to the underworld, which is fine, but being from there will either mean you are from a powerful tribe, or, from a tribe in the underworld. I can work with either.

Prismatic is a cool choice.

For someone with very little idea, you're doing well. You've rolled your dice and you've assigned your ability scores and factored in your Racial Bonuses. If you like, you can download PCGen which is a character creation software, takes you through everything step by step. It's a little clunky if you don't know how to make a character though. To use PCGen, you'll also need these technically not legal rulesets for it here; these basically will provide you with everything from a published 3.5e book to make your character.

However, we can do it here in the forum as well. Because you want Dragonwrought, you've already selected your 1st-level feat. Next, you should assign your skill-points. You have 17 INT which is a +3. As a Wizard at first level, you therefore have 20 points to assign. Assuming you take a second level as Wizard, you get an additional 5 points (you are creating a 2nd-level character), for a total of 25 points. You can assign a total of 5 ranks in class-skills, and 2.5 ranks in cross-class skills (Wizard skills are in the Players Handbook), don't forget you also have Diplomacy with a +2, as well as whatever other skill bonuses Kobolds get. (class skills cost 1 point, of which you have 25, to gain 1 rank; cross-class skills cost 2 points to gain 1 rank).

You need to roll more dice for your starting gold to determine how much crap you can buy, roll 3d4 x 10. Add about 500gp to whatever you roll to get you about the right level compared to the other characters, though they seem to be hoarding gold rather than spending it :) So spend your money however you want with the items in the books. I recommend some kind of weapon, a dagger or a stick, a spear; something. As a magic user, you probably want to focus on protecting yourself as much as possible, tanglefoot bags or splash damage projectiles can help keep badies away from you.

For your wizardy magic, you start with all 0-level spells. Remember you don't get the ones from prohibited schools of magic, if you're going with School Specialisation (I believe you are for the illusionist description). You then get an additional 6 1st-level spells for you spellbook. Then for 2nd-level you get another 2 spells for your spellbook of either 1st-level or 0-level spells (your choice, but 1st level spells are generally better bang for your buck).

Then you're good to go. If you need more explanation or help, just ask.

Are you chosing Illusionist? If so, you need to pick two schools of magic to be forbidden (I can't see anything on your sheet for it). Everything else looks pretty good. Once you confirm the above I'll setup a sheet in PCGen for you and link it here.

That's correct, he'll be an illusionist. The schools Wikk will give up are Necromancy and Enchantment.

I've been doing a whole lot of reading of the Kobolds in the Races of the Dragon book and am absolutely loving their lore. To your idea about Wikk being from a powerful tribe if from the Worldmouth here is the backstory I've begun shaping in that vein:

Wikk Slyscale
Prismatic Dragonwrought Illusionist

When a warren grows too large to sustain its population they will divide their numbers in half; keeping the same number of workers, warriors, specialists, sorcerers, merchants and so on in either group. The migrant group will move to a location just far enough so that neither warren has to compete for resources. The Worldmouth however is so vast and rich in resources beneath the earth that even the most talented diviners anticipate the warren will be able to grow thrice the size in the next decade. One result of this immense wealth is a plethora of traveling tradesmen and merchants from the subterranean tribes.

One of these tribal merchants was bestowed a magnificent boon whilst leading her caravan - a dragonwrought egg! She sold her wares with all haste and hurried back to the Worldmouth where she and a party of warriors ascended through the winding tunnels of the cavern system 'til they arrived at the temple to Kurtulmak. Here, beneath the sun and the sky all dragonwrought are brought to learn to use their wings should they be born with a functional pair. In kobold society hard work, duty to one's tribe, respecting traditions, and reverence for dragons are all key tenets. Dragonwrought are revered and trained from birth to become sorcerers, keening their minds to call upon the magic inherent in their blood.

Wikk, a child whose scales shone of so very many colors at once would be the first to find a preference for casting from a spellbook. Wizards are a rarity among the kobolds and are highly frowned upon to the point of persecution and even exile. Were it not for his scales, surely Wikk would have suffered. Instead he was treated as an enigma for the duration of his youth. Having difficulty casting from within, his tutelage was provided not by the resident sorcerer but by an old and venerable lizard by the name of Skrikk. The arcanist first plied his trade to determine which school of magic most closely resonated with the young dragon. Illusory cantrips came the most easily to his pupil, and so the richly furnished cavern hewn for young dragonwrought would also be filled with arcane tomes from this school.

While birth defects are incredibly rare among the kobolds whom have an immensely diverse genetic pool, so too are dragonwrought. Doubling down, Wikk was born both weak and frail. It is in every day spent studying that he exercises his wings in hopes of one day being able to muster the strength to use them. It was speculated by the sorcerers present at the temple that his weakness of body is likely also the cause as to why he struggles to cast from within. Pushing into his adulthood, he would return to his tribe and ply the trade of his mother - joining her caravans and keeping the party's identities concealed behind illusions. On one such caravan his spells were seen through by their client and an ambush was lain. The kobolds, pressed against a wall called to Kurtulmak, informing him of their imminent arrival and fought tooth and claw.

Wikk would be the only survivor of the fight, and while most would return to their tribe to continue to be of use, Wikk hadn't been strong enough. Failing his immediate family, he sets out; taking inheritance of his mother's wagon and pony to seek the power and strength necessary to protect his people.
